Anna Wintour vs. Carine Roitfeld: Round two

“It’s very difficult not to become a puppet. Like Anna, she becomes so iconic that she becomes like a puppet. I don’t want to be like that, I don’t want to wear this uniform, I don’t want to be just an envelope.”

And so began the current feud between Anna Wintour and Carine Roitfeld. Although the French Vogue editor-in-chief claimed Amy Larocca of New York Magazine “misinterpreted” her remarks, La Wintour wasn’t buying it. And when asked about the article, Wintour replied, “Maybe you should ask Carine,” adding, “I have no comment.”

Suffice to say, the claws are out. And Anna is striking first:

Last week, the NYPost reported that NBA star Lebron James and supermodel Gisele Bundchen would be posing together on the April cover of Vogue for the “shape issue.” Well, the cover is out and we can’t help but feel that we’ve seen it somewhere before.

Sure, Lebron could never be confused with the ultra-fabulous Andre J. But look how both covers - featuring black man and attractive model - are so similar in format. Even right down to the cover lines - look how they are both mostly concentrated to the left side.

Verdict: Anna Wintour-1 and Haters-0

Let’s be real. French Vogue is still more directional, but this American Vogue cover is a huge step in the right direction. Not only is there a person of color fronting this issue, but a model as well - with the largest cover line boldly stating: “Gisele & Lebron + the world’s top models and star athletes”
